“Astra Vagoane Arad” is the largest manufacturer of freight wagons and bogies in Europe. The company was founded in 1891 under the name of “Machinery, Wagons and Ironworks Factory – John Weitzer”. Freight wagons, passenger cars, locomotives, electric trams were produced over the years, but also military equipment, campaign kitchens, agricultural machinery, for the Austrian, Hungarian, Italian, Greek, Bulgarian railways. Since 1990, the company “S.C. Astra Wagons Arad S.A. “ comprises two factories, producing passenger cars and, respectively, freight wagons.
The “Imperio” tram is one of the newest products. It is the first modern low-floored streetcar produced in Romania. Tram bogies are set to withstand speeds of up to 200 km/h, and can also be used as an overland subway. It has a capacity of 300 passengers and it is meant to replace the physically and morally worn vehicles in the Romanian depots. It is produced in cooperation with “Siemens” and has a modern design, according to the current technical standards. In 2017 the “Authentic” tram model was launched.
