“Electromagnetica” was founded in 1930 under the name „Standard Electrica Română”. It was the first Romanian telephones and communication accessories producer. The first local telephone line was created in Transilvania, in 1881, 5 years after the technology invented by Graham Bell. Starting 1948, the factory was producing electrical counters, electromagnetic systems, railway accessories.
EM-72 telephone’s design was similar to other telephones made in Europe and USA. How did It work? By connecting 2 conversation members with 2 different telephone numbers, belonging to the same telephone line – you could pick up the receiver to listen to the neighbor’s conversation but you had to wait for the conversation to end if you wanted to make another call. Communication errors were very common, while the privacy of the conversation was never sure, due to Romanian surveillance systems. Neighbors were knocking on eachothers door to make an urgent phone call, while in the village areas there was only one subscription to each street.
